Griffith Named Department Chair of Humanities
Lonnie Griffith will begin the fall semester as the Chair of the Humanities Department at Chatfield College. An instructor at Chatfield for more than seven years, Lonnie will teach at both the St. Martin Campus in Brown County and the Over-the-Rhine Campus in Cincinnati.
With more than 21 years of teaching experience, both at the high school and college level, Griffith earned his bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Cincinnati and master’s in History from Miami University. Lonnie tells a tale rich with history that led him to teaching, and credits it for his passion of all things history.
“It was no surprise to anyone that I became a history teacher. Perhaps because my family has been a part of Brown County history for the last 170 years,” he explained. “Students today are very visual learners, and my style of teaching involves taking relevant artifacts into the classroom—this shows that history isn’t just a bunch of dates in a book, but real stories about real people. I am very excited to start the semester as the department chair at a school I love very much.”
“Lonnie has consistently served our students by actively supporting their learning. We are pleased to have Lonnie take on this new responsibility, as he continues his commitment to our students’ successes,” said Dr. Peter Hanson, Chief Academic Officer and Dean.
Along with teaching a variety of courses at both campuses, Lonnie will also moderate a chess club at the Brown County Campus starting this fall.
Lonnie Griffith is a life-long resident of Georgetown, OH. He serves as a trustee for the U.S. Grant Homestead Association and helps run both Grant museums in Georgetown.
