FAFSA 2024: A Shorter, Simpler Process

February 6, 2024

For students applying to college in the 2024-2025 school year – the government’s application form for federal student aid recently got a facelift and is now available to the public.

The new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form is shorter and simpler, making it easier for students who want to apply for federal financial aid programs, including Federal Pell Grants, scholarships, work-study, and student loans.

What is the purpose of FAFSA?

The government uses the data submitted on this form to determine the amount of federal financial aid for which a student qualifies. States and colleges use it to determine how much additional financial aid they will offer a student through scholarships or other awards.

What kind of information do you submit on the FAFSA?

You submit financial information about the household in which you live.

  • How much money do you make?
  • How much money do your parents make?
  • What other financial assets does your household have?
  • Tax returns

Is filling out the FAFSA worth it?

Yes! Every year, millions of dollars in Federal Pell Grants are unclaimed by students who would qualify for the funds to help pay for college. Federal Pell Grants are awarded to students who display exceptional financial need and do not have to be repaid. It’s free money.

When should I fill out the FAFSA?

As soon as it opens. The form just opened on December 31, 2023, for students applying to college for the 2024-2025 school year. For students applying to college in 2026, the form will open in October 2024.

Why do I need to rush? You just said there’s money left over.

Not every student will qualify for Federal Pell Grants. Other monies like scholarships, work-study programs, and student loans are also up for grabs, and the money is given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

How long does it take to fill out the FAFSA?

According to the government’s website, some applicants will answer as few as 18 questions, which could take less than 10 minutes.

Where do I go to get the FAFSA form?

It is online. But BEFORE YOU CAN START THE FORM, you must apply for an FSA ID and create an account with studentaid.gov. You’ll need your social security number and email address to do this.
