The Art of Crafting a Brew Class Offered at Chatfield College

Ever wonder how your beer is made? Interested in crafting your own brew? There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes of the beer brewing process. As a hobby, many people craft their own beers at home or like to try new brews from local breweries.

Chatfield College will be offering a beer crafting class, entitled The Art of Crafting a Brew, as part of its Summer Enrichment Program. This class is being coordinated by Erik Scott, from Scott Family Farms, who will discuss the process of the brewing production. He has also assembled a great team of experts to share their knowledge of all aspects of the brewing process.  The class will meet every Tuesday evening, June 5th through July 17th  (except July 3rd) at Chatfield’s historic Brown County campus.

Class participants will learn about the history of brewing in the Cincinnati area thanks to the expertise of BeerDave, well known beer aficionado. Classes will cover the grains used, local hops resources, recipes, the brewing process, and of course tasting the product. An impressive lineup of guest speakers includes: Brad Burgerford from Ohio State University, local farm operators and brewers, including Adam Cowan from Old Firehouse, Williamsburg and Dave Caraway from Sons of Toil, Mt. Orab. Erik Scott will lead the overall discussion of grain and hops farming and processing in support of brewing production.

You must be 21 years of age to participate. The program will also include a brewery tour and a tasting event at the Village Pizzeria in Fayetteville, featuring the products of Son of Toil Brewery, The Old Firehouse Brewery and TinCap Hard Cider from Wilmington.  There is an additional $10 fee for the tasting event.

The fee for each summer enrichment course at Chatfield is only $40. To register for this class, or to view other enrichment classes available this summer, visit or call 513-875-3344.
