The Art of Crafting a Brew Class a Huge Success!

On June 5th, Chatfield kicked off the first The Art of Crafting a Brew class of the summer and had a huge success. This class is part of Chatfield’s Summer Enrichment Program, and is being coordinated by Erik Scott, from Scott Family Farms. Scott led the discussion on what the class would cover during the following sessions, which include the grains used, local hops resources, recipes, the brewing process, and of course tasting the product. He has also assembled a great team of experts to share their knowledge of all aspects of the brewing process.

Beer Dave, a well-known beer aficionado, was also in attendance, where he discussed the history of brewing beer in the Cincinnati area and in other places around the globe. He was able to provide a large perspective on the beer brewing process and history behind it all including how it developed our culture, the effects during the prohibition, and so much more.

This class provided interesting and insightful information for those who attended, and it was able to set the stage for future sessions. This class is aimed for those who are interested in the process of brewing beer; however, there are many people in the class who are just there to have fun and learn more about beer. The entire class is entertaining and knowledgeable and will continue to provide fun activities and discussion as the class progresses.

The class will meet every Tuesday evening until July 17th (except July 3rd) at Chatfield’s St. Martin campus. Future classes have an impressive lineup of guest speakers including: Brad Burgerford from Ohio State University, local farm operators and brewers, including Adam Cowan from Old Firehouse, Williamsburg and Dave Caraway from Sons of Toil, Mt. Orab. The program will also include a brewery tour and a tasting event at the Village Pizzeria in Fayetteville, featuring the products of Son of Toil Brewery, The Old Firehouse Brewery and TinCap Hard Cider from Wilmington. There is an additional $10 fee for the tasting event.

Interested in signing up? It’s not too late! You must be 21 years of age to participate in this class. The fee for each summer enrichment course at Chatfield is only $40.
