Chatfield Receives $100,000 Grant for Faculty Development

Chatfield College is the recipient of an anonymous grant of $100,000 to be used for faculty development. Partnering with The Union Institute & University, the grant will cover 75% of the cost of coursework needed by current and future instructors to meet the credentialing requirements established by the Higher Learning Commission in order to teach at Chatfield.

Chatfield President John P. Tafaro, in announcing the grant, said, “We are very grateful for the generosity of this foundation – one of many that supports Chatfield’s Mission and values.  With this grant, we will continue our efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning at Chatfield, for the benefit of our inspiring students.”

In the past, many college instructors were credentialed by virtue of holding a Master’s degree in Education. This qualification served Chatfield and its students well for many years.  Currently, however, the Higher Learning Commission’s assumed practice B-2 requires instructors have a master’s degree in the specific field they teach or a minimum of 18 credit hours towards that graduate degree.

“This amazing grant will allow us to empower our faculty in the same way we empower our students-through education and support” explained Dr. Peter Hanson, Academic Dean. “And we are thrilled to be working with The Union Institute & University on this cutting-edge initiative. We know our faculty will benefit from their time at The Union, which in turn will result in big benefits for Chatfield students.”

Union’s President Dr. Roger Sublett adds, “Union Institute & University is proud to serve as a partner with Chatfield College providing the classes to faculty members required to meet accreditation standards established by the Higher Learning Commission as one outcome of the HLC accreditation visit to Chatfield.  Collaboration, cooperation, and partnerships are hallmarks of Union’s founding in 1964 as the Consortium for Research & Experimentation in Higher Education.  Both Union and Chatfield are working together to make sure that the educational focus is on the student learning outcomes and preparing Chatfield College students for graduation and productive lives and careers.  It is one example of the power of collaboration in higher education meeting the student needs of the greater Cincinnati community.”

This opportunity provides a viable path for current teachers who have taken some graduate coursework and want to pursue a teaching career in a college setting.
