Chatfield to Hold Chess Clubs at Both Campuses

If you’ve always wanted to learn how to play Chess, or if you already play and want the opportunity to sharpen your skills, then check out Chatfield’s new Chess Club!

The Chess Club will meet at both campuses on Mondays and Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. in the Welcome Center on the St. Martin campus and in the Commons area at the OTR campus.

The St. Martin club will be led by Lonnie Griffith, Chair of the Humanities department.  The OTR club will be led by Shane Heekin, Veteran’s Liaison.

Chess is a game of strategy played on a checkered board with sixteen pieces that are moved and used to capture opposing pieces according to precise rules. The objective of the game is to force the opponent’s most important piece, the king, into checkmate. This is a position in which the king cannot be moved to avoid capture.

According to Griffith, there are many benefits to playing chess.  “Studies have shown that chess increases academic performance, attention span, and memory skills and helps develop logic and problem-solving skills,” he said.  “It’s a fascinating game on so many levels – always full of turns.  You can play chess your entire life, and still be surprised.”

Heekin says chess is easy to learn and he is looking forward to leading the OTR club. “If you don’t know how to play, we will teach you,” he said.  “There will be chess sets available at both campuses so you can practice and play any time you want.”
