Become a Beekeeper

Beekeeping is creating quite a “buzz” lately, with many people taking it up as a hobby and even using it for extra income.  Beehives are popping up all over the country as having honey bees increases pollination for crops and flowers as well as providing a side crop of honey to eat or sell.  It can also relieve the stresses of daily living and working.

Chatfield College is offering a beekeeping class called “Polinators & Bees” as part of its Summer Enrichment Program.  The class will be taught by Chris Dresel, president, and Gary Keuffer, coordinator of education, for the Brown County Beekeepers Association and will meet every Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. from June 7-July 8.

Class participants will learn about the importance of pollinators, what’s required to get started in beekeeping, the pros and cons of several styles of beekeeping, how to maintain the bee hive, selecting plants that are the most beneficial to pollinators, and ways to get free bees by trapping and removing them from trees and structures.

The fee for this summer enrichment class is $40.  To register for this class, or to view other enrichment classes available this summer, visit www.chatfield.edu/academics/additional-educational-opportunities/summerenrichment or call 513-875-3344.

Chatfield College is a private, Catholic, liberal arts college offering the Associate of Arts degree at its St. Martin campus in northern Brown County, and is an open enrollment college. Chatfield’s open enrollment policy means that prospective students need only have a High School Diploma or GED to attend Chatfield and will be guided individually through the enrollment and Financial Aid application process. Chatfield College is located at 20918 State Route 251; St. Martin, OH  45118.  For more information, visit the website at www.chatfield.edu or call 513-875-3344.
