Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the unique challenges and successes of Hispanic students across our country. Chatfield Scholar Michelle Mendoza moved to the U.S. when she was seventeen, expecting to complete her final semester in high school. Things did not go according to plan, and it took more than two decades for Michelle to earn her GED.

With support from The Chatfield Edge, Michelle now has her sights set on attending the University of Cincinnati in January to major in Psychology. She hopes to provide guidance and resources to others in the Hispanic community to make their journeys a bit easier than her own.

Mentor Spotlight – John Tafaro

John Tafaro is a strong proponent of lifelong learning, which is one of the reasons he values mentoring. Having served as Chatfield College’s president from 2009 – 2019, he is dedicated to doing his part to make sure the educational legacy of the Ursulines of Brown County continues.

John previously enjoyed mentoring two students from Goshen High School. After retiring, mentoring with The Chatfield Edge was a natural progression. “You are never too old to learn or learn from others, regardless of their age, circumstances, or where they are on their educational and life journey,” said John.
